Bestselling author, motivational speaker and behavioural scientist, Steve Maraboli once said: “It’s a lack of clarity that creates chaos and frustration. Those emotions are poison to any living goal.”
Whether in business or life, having clarity of thought and a sense of purpose serves well to set us on our way to achieving great things. As our working life forms a great part of who we are, having that stability and clarity is important to reducing to the stress of life outside of work.
So what can be done to make running a business or working in a business less chaotic and stressful?
The answer – well defined and maintained human resources systems, policies, processes and procedures. Without these in place, there is a likelihood that employees will feel unappreciated, lack direction and at worst, undervalued leading to high turnover and costly disciplinary issues. Without these, the door to chaos is flung wide open.
In a business, the management of human resources is critical to achieving strategic business goals. Leaders in HR management participate in the corporate decision-making that underlies employee assessments and the projection of future workforce based on the needs of the organisation.
For the employees, this also means that they know how they are going to compensated, what benefits/rewards are owed to them, if the organisation provides safe work conditions, whether the employer is equitable in treating and addressing employment relations issues and if they have access to further training and development opportunities.
When these things are clear and present, employees will perform to expectation and this helps reduce any liability related related to allegations of unfair work practices. It also improves employee satisfaction, thereby engendering loyalty and a positive morale throughout.
Solid HR systems, policies, processes and procedures also helps to attract and retain the best employees in addition to creating a healthy organisational culture.
The first step in the ladder to achieving this state of equilibrium starts with a robust recruitment process which identifies best fit in terms of skills, experience, attitude and social fit for a start.
The next step is ensuring the employee is given a proper onboarding and induction/orientation process that lays out expectations at the get go. This will go a long way in setting the employee up for success.
